GAYLE
Situated just half a mile north of the lively market town of Hawes, Gayle is a very quiet and picturesque village.
At the foot of Sleddale, Duerley beck cascades over a series of limestone steps in the centre of the village before sweeping under the packhorse bridge down to a 3 storey mill which won the northern heat of the BBCs Restoration series (2004). Built in 1776 and with all its machinery in place once was used as a cotton mill and later for wool now provides a welcome visitors centre.
